Germany’s Hubertus Schmidt was born on 8 October 1959 in Haaren, Germany. He had his first riding lessons at age nine at Schloss Hamborn. He took up dressage and jumping at the age of 14. His father built a riding school in the 1970s, and his family has always been involved in horse breeding and equestrian sport. He runs the Der Flyenhof stables which was set up by his father.
He won team gold and finished 5th individually at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, team gold at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, team gold and individual silver at the 2005 European Championships in Hagen with Wansuela Suerte. He competed at three World Cup Finals (2005, Las Vegas/2004, Dusseldorf/ 2000, ‘s-Hertogenbosch).
His horse Imperio 3 (2003) is a Trakhener stallion by Connery x Balfour xx.
His horse Sammy Deluxe 4 (2006) is a Westphalian gelding by Sir Donnerhall x Florestan I.
